Path information
We will discover the Edward Morgan Forster path (CAI path 353A), a fascinating route that will lead us to the Fontana Carosa Chapel and the Fratte Castle. A route dedicated to the English writer who visited Ravello in May 1902 and where his story “The Story of a Panic” was set.
Starting from the charming Piazza Duomo of Ravello, at 365 metres above sea level, the path winds through the Valle del Dragone, named after the River Dragone that flows from the top of the Lattari Mountains down to the coastal town of Atrani.
The valley, Valle del Dragone separates the villages of Ravello and Scala. Accessible to people of all ages, it is a short walk from the city centre, with a route that offers real enjoyment. Through the ancient city walls, we will immerse ourselves in the surrounding countryside among impressive chestnut groves, lush vegetation and ancient ruins, ruins of limestone kilns, rubble and dry stone walls that were used for the division of the terraces that were once the centre of Ravello’s economy.
During the excursion, we will visit the chapel and the source of the fresh water spring, Fontana Carosa. Then we will climb about 100 metres to the Passo Del Lupo area at 650 metres above sea level, while enjoying a spectacular view of Ravello with the sea as a backdrop.
Afterwards, we will descend through the chestnut groves, passing the ruins of Fratta Castle and the hamlet of Ravello, Monte Brusara. From there, the return walk to Piazza Duomo will take about 30 minutes via a downhill path of steps.
